We’re Blessed . . . with Blessed Assurance

THE song (hymn) which best reflects Assurance is this one, written by Frances J. Crosby in 1873: Blessed Assurance.

Written over 140 years ago, it nonetheless meshes nicely with the recent P.U.S.H. post ‘advice’ that Fred Hammond’s Radical for Christ gave – in the spoken word portion of “We’re Blessed” video:

That success would come to God-trusting people who praised the Lord, understanding that ‘he dwells in their praise‘ . . . and that He’s ‘exceeding abundantly’ able to help such Christians successfully overcome ‘Midnight Hour’ situations.

Frances Crosby advices that we ‘praise our Savior all the day long.’     Fred Hammond reminds us that the Savior dwells ‘in the midst of our praise’ – which, along with praying, was what a Christian ought to do to get through.

Again, Hammond’s gospel song (1997) is entitled “We’re Blessed”.   In Crosby’s classic hymn, “Blessed Assurance”, we’re reminded that we’re ‘blest’ – due to our blessed assurance.   The hymn’s refrain states: Perfect submission, all is at rest, I in my Savior am happy and blest.   Sounds like a Ephesians 3:20 Christian attitude to me! (i.e divine power for those who let the Holy Spirit work in them)     Hmm.   2 songs written over a century apart telling us the exact SAME thing:  To be ‘happy and blessed’, to get out of tough situations, do this: Praise the Lord.

  • Like scripture, hymns serve I feel as Building Blocks for every Christian’s life.
  • Hymns also serve as a universally-cherished way to ‘make a joyful noise’ to Him.   What Christian church (regardless of it’s denomination) doesn’t sing Blessed Assurance?
  • Hebrews 10:22 tells us:  Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.

The Hymn:

Blessed Assurance

  • Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!
    Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine!
    Heir of salvation, purchase of God,
    Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood.

Refrain:
This is my story, this is my song,
Praising my Savior all the day long;
This is my story, this is my song,
Praising my Savior all the day long.

  • Perfect submission, perfect delight,
    Visions of rapture now burst on my sight;
    Angels, descending, bring from above
    Echoes of mercy, whispers of love.

  • Perfect submission, all is at rest,
    I in my Savior am happy and blest,
    Watching and waiting, looking above,
    Filled with His goodness, lost in His love.
